First Aid

DANE ROYD First Aiders:
reassure, respond and help

I am Mrs Kendall and one of my jobs in school is to make sure everyone is happy and safe.
Part of this role is to make sure children have the skills and knowledge should an accident occur. I believe this is such an important part of education as it equips our young people with life skills which will hopefully stay with them forever.
I am a pediatric First Aider in school and really enjoyed my training. I hope the children enjoy it as much.

Intent - Why is First Aid important for our children?

At Dane Royd Junior and Infant School, our vision is to equip our children with the knowledge and skills to take on with them in life. A huge focsu of our curriculum is to try and teach key life skills to a level that will not only help them in life today, but that will hopefully stay with them forever. We never like to think of children needing to use First Aid, however, should an accident occur, it is better our children are prepared and have some knowledge and skills which could ultimately help save a life.

Implement - What will our children learn?

The Department for Education recommends that pupils at KS2 should know:

  • How to make a clear and efficient call to emergency services

  • Concepts of basic first aid.

We have used the recommended first aid pathway written by St John's ambulance as a starting point in planning a relevant and progressive curriculum for our children. Staff considered what skills were needed at different ages and stages and planned a cohesive curriculum, beginning with our youngest children in UFS, through to our oldest children in Year 6.

Impact - How will it help our children?

By teaching our children with the basic first aid skills, we aim to instill a confidence in calmly dealing with an accident should one ever occur. The skills learnt through first aid are transferable across all stressful situations and these should equip children will solid foundations moving forward.
