A warm welcome to Year 1!
Your class Teacher is Miss Hudson, supported by the fabulous Mrs Fleming.
In Year 1 we endeavor to make our classroom a safe, fun and encouraging learning environment where:
We are all friends.
We ‘have a go’.
We listen carefully, to our teacher and to each other.
We have lots of fun as we learn.
Year 1 is a key year that nurtures the transition from the play based curriculum of Upper Foundation Stage into the main school curriculum.
Over the year, children are encouraged to become independent learners and understand the importance of having a ‘can do’ attitude.
We teach and learn through half-termly topics. Through these topics we develop reading and writing skills, as well as using our investigative, imaginative and creative skills to make our learning purposeful and engaging.
We are lucky enough in Year 1 to have a fantastic learning environment, supplemented by our Key Stage shared area and outdoor area which is used to support core subjects such as science and geography.
Have a nosey at our twitter feed @DaneRoydY1 to keep up to date with the learning taking place every week, don’t forget to like and comment!
Every Monday afternoon, please bring both indoor and outdoor kits. We keep kits in school throughout the week for any additional sporting activities that may arise. They will be sent home on Friday’s for washing.
We would love parents to read with your child every day and sign their reading record.
Make the most of this special time and ask lots of questions about the stories they bring home. (All parents have been provided with a comprehension skills bookmark to give you lots of ideas to make the task less onerous! Please ask for a replacement if needed.)
Spelling lists are sent home on a Friday, they follow spelling patterns and digraphs to compliment what the children are learning in phonics. Please find time to practice throughout the week in time for a short spelling test on Friday mornings. (Spelling test is random so be sure to practice the spellings out of order!)
At the end of a unit we will send home a ‘Maths Task’ to consolidate their learning.
This is an optional task, but is a great way for them to share their knowledge with you.
Each half term we send a sheet with suggested activities you could do with your child to complement our topic. Again these are not compulsory, but we find the kids love to share them with the rest of the class.
In Year 1 we are sent a special challenge from the aliens called the ‘Phonics Screening Test’ Children are given a list of 40 words, some real words and some made-up words. They have to sound them out so that they can read them independently.
Before we get the ‘challenge’ we will be practicing our Phase 3 and 5 sounds; as well as segmenting and blending words in daily phonics sessions.
Phonics screening test is wc 8th June 2020 - it is vital your child attends school.
