Year 6

Mrs Louden & Mrs Kendall

Welcome to Year 6! We are really looking forward to writing the final chapter of Year 6’s journey at Dane Royd before they go and shine at their chosen High School. We feel very privileged to share their final experiences with them and hope to make many special memories in the year ahead.

The staff working in Year 6 this year are Mrs Louden, Mrs Kendall and Mrs Hall.

Mrs Hall is an amazing artist who will always be on hand with a creative and unique idea for the class to learn. The artwork always looks lovely on our displays.

Mrs Louden loves to read and will often be found in the reading corner with a good book! Ask her about new books and current authors to spark your love in reading.

Mrs Kendall loves history and loves to visit museums and read books about anything historical, especially World War 2 which is one of the brilliant topics taught in UKS2.

We are all experienced in the trials and tribulations of Year 6 and are always on standby with guidance and support. We understand the year ahead is an important year, and at times may be challenging.  We have lots of advice and tips to make it as fun and engaging as possible and help you every step of the way. As a staff, we will expect you to have pride in your learning and work hard to reach your full potential. We will encourage you to do your best, and help you be High School ready.

We have some fantastic topics planned for the year ahead including:

It’s Never too Late: considering how future generations can make changes to save the planet and exploring the damage that has already been done.

Down t’pit: exploring the history and importance of coal mining in our local area and how the Government at the time impacted on peoples’ lives nationally and locally.

Almighty America; questioning the power America has on the world and its impact on the UK. We will also enjoy looking at physical features of America and contrasting them to Britain.

Follow our exciting journey on twitter, @DaneRoydY6.

How can I be organised this year?

Creative tasks linked to topics will be sent home at the beginning of a new term. Children are welcome to complete none, some or all of the suggested activities. If children choose to complete an activity, we encourage them to share their work/experiences with the class.

Weekly homework will be sent home on a Friday. For Year 6, this will consist of weekly spellings, a maths task and either a reading or SPAG task. It is important that these set tasks are completed to consolidate learning in class in preparation for end of year assessments.

Children need to continue their reading book at least three times a week at home.

PE Kit

PE kit should be brought into school on a Monday and taken home on a Friday. All items need to be labelled please.

White plain T-shirt and black shorts, trainers.

In poor weather, children may wear a plain black track suit for outdoor PE.

How can I help at home?

We always encourage children to be independent learners and where they feel they need additional support, we are happy to support and help. Children may benefit from looking at additional resources at home to reinforce learning and prepare them for their end of year assessments.

Please see suggested websites below as a starting point, but please speak to us if we can provide any additional support at home.
