Welcome to Year 1

Meet the Staff

Miss Hudson

Favourite subject to teach: I enjoy teaching phonics and writing, seeing the different ways children spell words using their phonic knowledge is both rewarding and entertaining at times!

Favourite book: Allan’s Big Scary Teeth, by Jarvis

Favourite Author: Children’s author Eric Carle

Favourite Song: Mr Brightside by The Killers

Hobbies:

I love to read and can often be found at home snuggled up with my Kindle. I’m addicted to home improvement programmes and love shopping!

I also try to keep fit by going to kettlebell and metafit classes as often as I can.

Mrs Frawley

Favourite subject:  I love teaching all subjects especially English, but my favourite is Religious Education.

Favourite book:  The Jolly Postman by Allan Ahlberg.

Favourite song:  I love music and my taste is so varied - anything from Queen to The Killers! Being a Beatles fan, my favourite song would definitely be ‘Hey Jude’!

Hobbies: I enjoy relaxing by doing some yoga, but running is great too - I completed The Great North Run a few years ago and would like to do it again someday! I love reading books which are set in different countries, especially India, but I also enjoy browsing through interior design magazines. My three children and their hobbies keep me extremely busy, but our favourite time together is a country walk with our dog, Buddy.

Mrs Bond

Favourite subject: I love teaching Music but my favourite subject is History. Finding out about the past using different sources as clues can be exciting.

Favourite book: My favourite book has always been The Tiger Who Came to tea. Both my daughters love reading this with me.

Interests: I like to play musical instruments as a performer, in concert or below the stage at the theatre. I love to cook and am a keen baker - though still searching for the perfect chocolate cake recipe!

What I will help you with this year: I'm here to support your learning in all ways. I will read with you, help you to work things out, remind you when you've forgotten something and help you up when you fall.

Miss Walsh

We set high expectations, and throughout the year, children are encouraged to become independent learners and understand the importance of having a ‘can do’ attitude.

All children will access a daily phonics and reading lesson following the Read, write inc scheme - they will become confident at decoding and spelling words using Fred talk and Fred fingers.

We teach and learn through half-termly topics in order to capture children’s interest and provide plenty of opportunities for asking questions and sharing the children’s own experiences. You could be learning about The Great Fire of London, Castles, Magical Mapping or even the Seaside!

We are lucky enough in Year 1 to have a fantastic learning environment, supplemented by our Key Stage shared area and outdoor area which is used to support core subjects such as science and geography.

Please follow us on twitter @DaneRoydY1 to keep up to date with the learning taking place every week, don’t forget to like and comment!

What will we learn this year?
